Bendix/King IN-182A - Faceplate installation directions

Before you begin: Check to see if you received the proper faceplate insert. Are the numbers the same as your radio? Does it fit correctly? Although the holes and text will be the same, many faceplate manufacturers made different widths or heights of the same faceplate. (Just to make life a little more interesting)

1. Have this insert installed by an avionics shop if you do not have all the proper tools, are not a qualified technician or are not sure you are capable of doing this job.
2.

Turn all knobs counter clockwise to their stops. Make a sketch or digital photo of the 4 knobs, their knob graphics and the text on the 8 switches so that they will be in the correct positions when reassembled.

3. Remove the four knobs by prying off the top caps which covers a hidden screw in the center of each knob. Hold the knob with pliers, careful not to damage them. Do not remove the screws. Loosen them only until the knobs slide off.
4. Check that the fit of the new faceplate insert is good before removing the old one.
5. Use a small screwdriver to pry off the faceplate from the lockdown holes.
6. Remove the 8 buttons and place them in the same order as on the radar unit.
7. Scrap off any excess glue residue that may interfere with the new insert seating to the bottom.
8. Double check that the new insert fits correctly.
9. If your faceplate is gray and you want it black or if it needs painting, follow directions 10a thru 10f. Otherwise go to #11.
10a. Fill any dents with a auto body plastic filler or similar material.
10b. Lightly sand with a fine grit sandpaper for good paint adhesion.
10c. Clean the areas that need painting with alcohol.
10d. Tape off the 2 inner cavities where the knobs were, the display screen and the metal housing body of the unit.
10e. Paint the faceplate housing with light thin coats of a quality paint such as Krylon'sŪ 1613 Semi-Flat Black paint.
10f. When the paint is dry, remove the protective tape.
11. Place the 8 push buttons on their respective positions.
12. Remove the double face tape backing from the new insert.
13. Place the new inserts into faceplate housing making sure the 8 buttons come through correctly. Press FIRMLY all around to assure good tape adhesion. Reinstall the knobs and their respective tops.
14. Tell all your aircraft buddies about Aircraft Engravers and place the enclosed sticker on the metal case for future reference.
